Free Recovery Support following Cyclone Narelle
A gentle place to begin
Living through a cyclone and everything that follows, can ask a great deal of our minds, bodies and nervous systems.
Since Cyclone Narelle, you may have been navigating clean-up, rebuilding, insurance claims, housing uncertainty, changes within the community, work and family life - all while trying to keep everyday life moving.
Sometimes we don’t fully notice the emotional impact until the immediate danger and urgency have passed.
You might notice:
• feeling constantly “on alert”
• anxiety as another cyclone season approaches
• difficulty sleeping or switching off
• feeling overwhelmed, unsettled or not quite yourself
• grief, stress or emotional exhaustion
• strong reactions to wind, rain or weather changes
These can be very understandable responses after something significant.
Sometimes the mind knows the cyclone is over, while the nervous system is still asking:
“Is it really safe now?”
Three Recovery Pathways
With funding from the Government of Western Australia Department of Communities, eligible Exmouth community members can access free recovery support through three different pathways.
Trauma-Informed Counselling
You can access up to 6 free counselling sessions, with the possibility of a further 6 sessions where additional support is needed and approved.
Counselling offers a gentle space to talk, make sense of what you’ve been experiencing and better understand the ways your nervous system may still be responding after the cyclone.
Sessions can be offered:
In person • Online • By phone • Home-based
We can work at your pace, with choice and curiosity, without needing to relive everything that happened.
Finding Steady Ground
6-Week Mental Health Aware Yoga Program
A gentle, trauma-informed yoga program supporting the body and nervous system through movement, breath, grounding, rest and relaxation.
You don’t need to be flexible or have any previous yoga experience.
Rather than trying to force the body to relax, the program offers opportunities to notice what helps your nervous system feel more supported, connected and steady.
Classes are 75 minutes each week for 6 weeks, with in-person and online options depending on availability and community interest.
After the Cyclone
90-Minute Trauma, Grief & Nervous System Workshop
A gentle and practical workshop exploring what can happen in the body and nervous system after an overwhelming event.
We’ll explore:
• trauma and protective survival responses
• why we can remain “on alert” after the danger has passed
• grief and loss after a natural disaster
• how weather and cyclone-season reminders can activate the nervous system
• simple practical tools for grounding, regulation and finding steadiness
The workshop can be offered in person in a small group or online from the comfort of your home.
Finding the Support That Feels Right for You
There isn’t one right way to recover.
You may feel drawn to having somewhere safe to talk. You might prefer body-based support through yoga and movement. Or perhaps understanding what is happening in your nervous system and learning some practical tools feels like the best place to begin.
You may also find that a combination of these supports feels helpful.
You don’t need to know exactly what you need before reaching out. We can work that out together.
